How does a DC Jack break
in the first place?
An extremely common problem in laptops is a faulty
dc jack. This usually occurs through physical stress placed on
the cord of the laptop. While it's true that some models are
weaker than others and that some models will ship with physical
defects in the design that make them more prone to such an issue, 9
times out of 10 the fault has occured by having too much force with
the cord or the laptop itself.
In some cases the laptop can be dropped with the chord plugged in,
in others the chord may be stretched across a room and it becomes
tripped over. There are any number of ways to damage it, but
the usual outcome is a break in the solder connection that allows
the charger to connect with the battery.
Repair or Replacement?
In almost all cases the laptop can be repaired quite
easily. The DC jack itself is a somewhat fragile component,
and when it's been broken by force, usually this means the jacks
structure has been quite damaged. In some cases where
a mild break has occured and the structural integrity of the DC jack
remains intact, a simple solder could be used to repair the problem.
This alone though will never return the jack to it's previous
strength, and it may be vulnerable to another break in the near
future.
The method we use a a full DC jack replacement. An average
DC jack will usually cost $20 - $30 based on model. Depending
on the complexity of the design of your laptop, teardown and
installation will usually take 1 - 2 hours.
At PC-T Services we offer a flat rate replacement cost for this
service, this cost includes pick and delivery of your laptop.
The cost for this service is $125, and turn around time can be
anywhere from 24 hours to 1 week based on availability of your
